Pumpelly's rule is a method of defining geologic structures by its small-scale structures as the equivalent formation within a prospect area. It states that small structures are a key to and mimic the styles and orientations of a larger structures of the same generation within a particular area. It was applied to geology by Raphael Pumpelly in the early 20th century.
